Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between fibreglass, concrete, and Aqualux pools?

Fibreglass: Pre-moulded shells, quick install but limited design options.

Concrete: Fully customisable, but costly and time-consuming to build.

Aqualux: Custom-built on-site using galvanised steel/concrete-in walls, offering fast install, flexibility, and durability.

Which pool type allows for the most design freedom?

  • Concrete and Aqualux pools both allow custom shapes and sizes.

  • However, Aqualux pools are faster and more cost-effective to build than concrete, with fewer structural limitations.

What’s the strongest pool structure?

  • Concrete is solid but can crack over time.

  • Aqualux pools use galvanised panels reinforced with concrete, offering exceptional strength and resistance to ground movement.

  • Fibreglass shells can flex but are more prone to osmosis or cracking in unstable soils

Which pool lasts the longest?

  • Aqualux pools can last 40+ years, with only the vinyl liner needing replacement approximately every 15 years.

  • Concrete pools are also long-lasting but require resurfacing every 10–15 years.

  • Fibreglass pools can last up to 20 years but may face surface issues over time.

What’s the easiest to maintain?

  • Aqualux pools have a smooth liner that resists algae and is easy to clean.

  • Fibreglass is low-maintenance initially but can stain or blister.

  • Concrete is porous and requires regular brushing and chemical balancing.

Which pool is best for difficult or sloped sites?

  • Aqualux pools are built on-site, making them ideal for sloped, tight, or tricky locations.

  • Concrete can also work but involves more excavation.

  • Fibreglass pools are limited due to transport and shell size.

What about installation time?

  • Aqualux pools can be installed quickly — often faster than concrete.

  • Fibreglass is also quick, but site access can be a problem.

  • Concrete pools take the longest, often several months.

Are there other pool builders offering galvanised steel wall pool structures?

  • Yes, Cascade Pools have been around since 1970 and is considered pioneers of the pool industry in New Zealand. Their pool build work has stood the test of time, proving that the galvanised steel/concrete-in wall method is one of the most reliable and proven construction methods on the market.

What makes Aqualux pools stand out from other pool options?

  • One key feature that sets Aqualux pools apart is their ability to retain water temperature 4–5°C higher than other pools. This is thanks to the special insulation foam installed with every pool, providing better heat retention, improved energy efficiency, and a longer swimming season.

What is the special insulation foam used in Aqualux pools?

  • The insulation foam used in Aqualux pools is a premium refrigerator-grade infill foam. This high-performance material is designed to retain heat efficiently, similar to how insulation works in commercial refrigeration, helping maintain warmer water temperatures and reducing heating costs.

Who is behind Aqualux Pools?

  • Aqualux Pools is part of Aqua-Tech Industries, a trusted name in the New Zealand since 1974. The company was founded by John Sutherland, who built a strong legacy of quality and innovation. Today, the business is proudly carried on by his son, Jamie Sutherland, continuing the family’s long-standing expertise in pool industry.

Where do Aqualux pool components come from?

  • All main structural components of Aqualux pools — including the galvanised steel walls, insulation foam, and vinyl liners — are proudly made in New Zealand. This ensures high quality, local support, and reliability tailored to New Zealand conditions.

How often do I need to refurbish an Aqualux pool?

  • If properly maintained, the vinyl liner can easily last 15 years or more. Aqua-Tech Industries, the manufacturer of premium vinyl liners, has been refurbishing swimming pools in New Zealand and the Pacific for over 50 years.

Would Aqua-Tech Industries supply everything for my Aqualux pool?

  • Yes, Aqua-Tech supplies galvanised steel walls, insulation foam, vinyl pool liners, and pool covers, all made right here in New Zealand and available for viewing at 12 Hill Street, Onehunga, Auckland.

What is an Aqualux pool liner?

  • An Aqualux pool liner is a high-quality vinyl interior finish used in Aqualux and Cascade pools. It forms a smooth, flexible, and durable surface that lines the inside of the pool, providing a watertight seal and an attractive finish. Manufactured in New Zealand by Aqua-Tech Industries, Aqualux liners are known for their long lifespan, UV stability, and resistance to algae, staining, and abrasion.

Can an Aqualux liner be installed in any pool?

  • Absolutely -Aqualux liners are the original interior finish used in both Aqualux and Cascade Pools, and they are also a popular choice for refurbishing older fibreglass and concrete pools.
